Physical Education

At HPS, we aim to develop pupil's competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. We aim to encourage pupils to lead healthy, active lives by ensuring they are physically active for sustained periods of time and have access to competitive sports and activities.

Throughout their time at HPS, pupils will experience a variety of sports. In EYFS and KS1, the children learn a range of fine and gross motor skills which they can begin to refine in small activities and tasks. Lower Key Stage 2, there is more of a focus on embedding the necessary skills to succeed in sports whilst also giving pupils the opportunity apply their newly learned skills in game-based situations. In Upper Key Stage 2, sports are revisited and we build upon the basic skills learned further down the school and develop them further with a focus more on applying the skills to different situations.

Swimming is an important life skill and our Year 4 and Year 5 pupils visit a local swimming pool to learn how to:

  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m
  • Use a range of strokes effectively for example front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke

We take part in some Sandwell School Games competitions and selected children will represent our school at inter-school competitions. We also have intra-school competitions in PE lessons and our end of year Sports Day.

Various sports clubs are offered throughout the year to all year groups. These may be after school or delivered during lunchtime.
